Enjoying some Metaxa out of his father's 70 year old glass:
notice the gold-leaf "S" for "Saffas": here he is sitting under his own palette-knife pastoral oil on canvas, painted in 1958 ~ one of my favorites!

while in the hospital
Andrew had been in the hospital for a couple of days, and the nurses found out that he was an artist- he wasn't too shy about letting them know ;0). Dad had been too tired for weeks to do any sort of drawing, but one of the nurses brought him some paper and a pencil, put them on his eating table, and asked him to draw something. So while Niki, Sofia, and I (George) were present he started to draw a few lines...
This all took place in about 5 minutes or less. When the nurse came back to check on him, she was delighted to see what he had drawn (it appears to be a loose self-portrait), and he happily gave it too her. As she joyfully accepted it and walked out, I could not help but think that this might be the last sketch he would ever draw.... sadly I was right. Just 4 days later he left us. I've always been amazed at how dad puts a pen or pencil on paper and a beautiful drawing comes out!
During a previous ER hospital visit:
"Shhhhh... Don't tell the ER nurse we're sipping chocolate shakes, ok??"
(Actually she was fine with it, as she says "they are low in sodium"!)

"LET ME OUT!!!" Andrew always had his sense of humor....

Andrew loved getting outside when it was warm, and loved the feel of the sun's warmth on his head~ Casa Sandoval.
